Ohio Honor Student Faces Charges for Running Away

Stephanie Martin

July 2, 2010
Norwalk, Ohio--After being missing for almost three weeks, Abbi Obermiller, 17, was discovered on Wednesday, hiding in her boyfriend's attic. Abbi, a straight-A student, vanished on June 6, leaving behind a note that read, "I just couldn't take anymore of this drama."

Robert Young, Abbi's 20-year-old boyfriend, denied knowing what happened to her. He's been arrested for obstruction of justice, and Abbi faces charges in juvenile court for obstruction and "being an unruly child."

Abbi's parents say their relationship with their daughter became strained when she started dating Young, who they call controlling and possessive. "She was upset because we didn't like her boyfriend," said Abbi's mom, Rose. According to one report, Abbi planned to hide out until she turned 18 and could elope with Young.

At the police station, Abbi was reportedly glad to see her parents. Her dad, James, said, "She told her mother she was ready to go home." He added, "She's young. She's 17. She can make some mistakes and come back."

  • When you and your parents don't see eye to eye, do you defer to their authority or challenge it? Explain. Do you think your parents always have your best interests in mind? Why or why not?
  • If you were Abbi's parents, would you offer immediate forgiveness and understanding? Why or why not? Would you blame and punish her to teach her a lesson, or do you think she's already learned her lesson? Explain. What must it feel like to have such a big "mistake" played out on a national scene?
  • How do your parents feel about your dating partner or your friends? If they aren't comfortable with someone, do you value that opinion? break off the relationship? Explain.
  • How much age difference is appropriate between young people who are dating, and why? What are some warning signs that a relationship is getting controlling, abusive, or dangerous? Do you think you'd have the courage and strength to leave a boyfriend or girlfriend who was pressuring you in some way?
  • When have you tried to run away from a problem or conflict? How did that help-or complicate-matters?
