Apologizing

Bryan Belknap

Kicking and Screaming (PG)

Theme: Parents must sometimes apologize to their kids.

Scripture: Colossians 3:12-21

Clip Location: 1:15:30 through 1:16:45 (DVD Chapter: 16)

Synopsis: Phil apologizes to Sam, his young son, admitting he screwed up and got caught up in winning. He asks Sam to forgive him -- his son does.

Gospel Filter: It's a big deal any time a parent apologizes to their child. There's a lot of humility and grace mixed into both sides of the equation. Help your group not only to offer apologies when they're needed, but also learn to forgive their own stubborn parents who never reached this point.

Discussion Questions:

  • Have you ever had to apologize to your child like this? How did you feel afterward?

  • Has one of your parents ever apologized like this to you? How did their apology make you feel?

  • What does going through with such an apology say about the parent?

  • Read aloud Colossians 3:12-21. What commands does God give the family here? Does your family follow them? Why or why not? If not, how might living this way improve your family situation?

  • Do we have to forgive our parents if they never apologized to us like this? Explain. How might forgiveness without an apology possibly help heal your wounds anyway?
