Competition

Scott Firestone IV

The King of Kong (PG-13)

Scripture: Mark 10:42-45

Clip Location: 00:00:18 through 00:02:42 (DVD Chapter: 1)

Synopsis: This opening montage has some real nuggets of truth and insight from multiple people involved in the documentary.

Gospel Filter: This documentary is a fascinating look at competition, drive, and the cost of obsession. Use it to discuss the biblical truth about competition and priorities. Whether or not you're a video game fan, this is an excellent character study, and well worth watching.

Discussion Questions:

  • Are you competitive? Why or why not?

  • How did you react to these players revealing their desires to be famous? Would you have reacted differently if they were "cool" and not "nerds"? Why or why not?

Read aloud Mark 10:42-45. Ask:

  • Is competition wrong? Why or why not? Are Christians competitive any differently than non-Christians? Explain.

  • How do you react to the statement: "Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant"?
