Devil's Lies

Bryan Belknap

X-Men: The Last Stand (PG-13)

Theme: The devil often appeals to our pride.

Scripture: Genesis 3:1-7

Clip Location: 55:45 through 57:15 (DVD Chapter: 12)

Synopsis: Magneto confesses to Jean that he always saw her as a "goddess," marveling at her unlimited power. He couldn’t understand why Charles wanted to make her a mere mortal. Jean asks Magneto what he wants, and he claims a desire for her to live as she is, as nature intended. He encourages her to fight for personal freedom.

Gospel Filter: Sounds eerily like the snake's words in the garden, doesn’t it? The devil loves to use this lie -- that we were created to run free without boundaries or authorities. To be like "God" himself. Punch holes in this lie, helping your group members see the deadly fruit such thinking bears before it can take root.

Discussion Questions:

  • Is Magneto giving good advice? Why or why not? How is he trying to entice Jean?

  • How are Magneto's words similar to something the devil might say? How are they different?

  • Read aloud Genesis 3:1-7. Does the devil use similar temptations with us today? Explain. What kinds of things does he hold out as an "apple" today?

  • What makes the devil's words powerful? Why might a Christian who has the Holy Spirit inside still fall for his lies?

  • What lies does the devil tell you? How might believing his lies prevent a person from living out God’s plan? How can you protect yourself against his lies?
