Love: The Greatest Sacrifice

Scott Firestone IV

Iron Man (PG-13)

Topic: Sacrifice

Scripture: John 15:12-13

Clip location: 33:42 through 38:30 (DVD Chapter: 4)

Synopsis: Yinsen strays from "the plan" to buy Tony Stark time to power up his suit and escape. It costs him his life, but he implores Tony not to waste this sacrifice or his own life.

Gospel Filter: The movies make sacrifice seem so easy — something done with no hesitation. Jesus sacrificed himself for every one of us, and I can’t imagine it was easy. Use this to show group members that none of us should "waste" a life that’s been saved.

Discussion Questions:

  • What have you sacrificed for someone you cared about? Was it easy or difficult to make that sacrifice? Explain.

  • Would you do it again? Why or why not? What keeps people from sacrificing for others?

Read aloud John 15:12-13.

  • How do these verses define "the greatest love"? Does that make you look differently on Jesus’ sacrifice? Explain.

  • Do you think it was hard for Jesus to sacrifice himself? Why or why not?

  • What can you do to not "waste" his sacrifice?
