The Power of Confession

Scott Firestone IV

Beowulf (PG-13)

Scripture: Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

Clip Location: 1:23:54 through 01:27:41 (DVD Chapter 12)

Synopsis: Beowulf is off to destroy Grendel’s mother -- which he should have done all those years ago. His friends try to dissuade him, but he feels he must go anyway.

Gospel Filter: Beowulf realizes that his sins of the past have come back to haunt not only him, but also those under his care. He tries to confess his sin -- of sleeping with Grendel's mother rather than killing her -- to his friend, but he doesn't want to hear it, preferring to remain ignorant. Teach your kids about the freedom of confession.

Discussion Questions:

  • Have you ever tried to hide something in your past? Explain. How did you feel before it was found out?

  • Did your secret affect other people? Did that make it harder to keep the secret? Why or why not?

  • Read aloud Ecclesiastes 12:13-14. Ask: How does our sin hurt the people around us?

  • Why didn't Beowulf's friend want to hear his confession? Would a friend’s confession affect your friendship with him or her? Why or why not?
