The God We Worship

Dwayne Moore

Need to re-spark your worship? This session from Dwayne Moore's Pure Praise might be just the thing for your small group. You'll need a watch or clock with a second hand for this session.

After everyone has arrived, get the group’s attention and invite everyone to take part in a quick, fun activity. Tell them that they’ll all have one minute to greet five people individually. Here’s the catch: They must not speak, and they must find a new way to make contact with each person. So for example, if they shake hands with the first person, they must find a diff erent way to silently greet the second, third, and so on. Th is should lead to lots of laughter and funny antics!

After a minute has elapsed, ask participants to each find a partner and discuss their responses to these questions:

  • How easy or hard was it to find new ways to greet people?

  • What benefits can come from finding new ways to do a routine thing? What are some drawbacks?

  • What about your approach to worship? In what ways has it become routine?

  • What can you do to reignite the passion and awe that accompanies genuine worship?

After pairs have had sufficient time to discuss these questions, call the group back together. Ask several volunteers to share the fruits of their discussions.

Then say something like:It’s easy to get stuck in a rut when we think of God. We tend to acknowledge only those attributes we can comprehend. As a result, the genuine reverence and awe we should feel for God can be reduced to mere ritual and obligation. Before you leave, think of at least one thing you can do this week to deepen your understanding of God. It’s exciting to think of how our ever-deepening relationships with God will be reflected in our praise and worship in the weeks to come!
