Cruising Around

Carl Simmons

Cars. We all have them. We all need them. For many of us, they're one of the biggest investments we have. And yet most of us forget about them within a minute of turning them off. At least until something goes wrong.

So why not show some practical love to your fellow group members by giving each other's cars they the kind of care they deserve (and very likely need)?

Take a day to go from home to home, showing each other's cars some love. The more able members of your group can do oil changes or radiator flushes, or at least check all the fluid levels. Oil, transmission, brakes, steering, and radiator are all possibilities, depending on the year and make of car. Even those who don't know their filters from their fenders can wash the cars, clean the inside windows, or vacuum the carpets.

Ask your group members beforehand about any known issues with their cars, or if there's fluid levels that haven't been checked in quite some time. You might be able to go to the auto store beforehand and buy things in cheaper bulk quantities, depending on what needs are.

As you go from house to house, use the opportunity to make a conversational lunch and/or dinner out of it. With a little bit of advance planning, you could arrange to have different foods and refreshments at each home you stop at. Have a bigger celebration at your last stop, and take time to appreciate the work you've done for each other. Help your group take the next step by discussing the following:

  • What was it like to help your fellow group members in a practical way?

  • How this activity give you a greater appreciation for the things you own? For each other as a group?

  • How could you help other friends and neighbors in a way similar to this?
